Matias re-joined our firm as a Partner in August 2013 after obtaining his LLM in IP Law and spending 4 and a half years working in the Legal Department of Philip Morris International in Switzerland.
Given his in-house role and his experience in a European jurisdiction overseeing a multinational portfolio, Matias brings a very unique skill set to the Cikato team. Matias’ presence lends the Cikato Team a perspective and understanding that few if any IP firms in Latin America have. Matias has also brought his knowledge of the very best and latest strategies in IP protection and enforcement to our clients’ matters in Uruguay and in the region, resulting in some precedent setting cases.
His current focus areas at Cikato are: trademark portfolio management, trademark Prosecution and regulatory litigation.
Matias is a Uruguay qualified lawyer, called to the bar in 2004. He worked as an associate with Cikato from 2004 to 2007 before going on to obtain his LLM in IP from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
In March 2009, he joined the Trademark Department at Philip Morris International in Switzerland as in-house, where he handled Trademark Prosecution, Trademark Portfolio Management and Litigation for the Latin American Region (and some broader trademark projects).
In April 2012 he moved to the Litigation Department within Philip Morris International as “Counsel, Litigation”. He worked on complex smoking & health and regulatory litigation. For example, he worked in Arbitration proceedings, and in plain packaging issues.
